Wardrobes get sorted. Cupboards get reorganised. Windows get opened. There is something deeply instinctive about the impulse to clear out what accumulated over winter and create space for what is coming.

Almost nobody applies this instinct to their body.

And yet the gut, your body’s primary processing, clearing, and immune system headquarters, accumulates burden in exactly the same way. Slowly. Quietly. Until summer arrives with its barbecues, sugary drinks, dehydrating heat, and social meals, and the body that was already carrying too much is suddenly asked to carry more.

The result is predictable. Joint pain that arrives with the heat. Bloating that won’t settle after gatherings. A urinary tract infection that seems to come from nowhere. Fatigue that no amount of sunshine fixes. A body that feels heavier in August than it did in April.

This is not bad luck. It is a biological outcome that spring preparation can change.

What the Research Tells Us About Women and Gut Health

The numbers are striking. According to a 2023 survey conducted by MDVIP and Ipsos across more than 1,000 adults, two thirds of adults regularly experience digestive symptoms including gas, bloating, and abdominal pain, yet most never discuss it with a doctor or seek support.

The same survey found that over half of adults feel overwhelmed by conflicting information about diet and nutrition, and that 85% of respondents failed a basic gut health quiz.

Women are disproportionately affected. Research published in Gastroenterology in 2023, drawing on data from 51,425 individuals across 26 countries, found that nearly one in five people experience bloating at least once per week, and that women are significantly more affected than men.

A separate analysis from the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study found that 46.5% of adult women have at least one functional gastrointestinal disorder, compared to 34.2% of men. Women are also more than twice as likely to experience abdominal pain and discomfort multiple times per week.

These statistics are not abstract. They describe the daily experience of a large proportion of women who have simply learned to live with symptoms they consider inevitable.

They are not inevitable.

Why Summer Makes It Worse

Summer is a genuinely joyful season. It is also, from a gut health perspective, one of the most demanding.

Barbecue foods are typically high in processed meats, refined carbohydrates, and sugar, all of which feed the harmful bacteria in the gut microbiome while starving the beneficial ones. Research published in the journal Nutrients confirms that high sugar intake shifts the balance of gut bacteria toward pro-inflammatory species, while simultaneously reducing the Bacteroidetes that protect the gut lining and regulate immune function.

Sugary treats and cold drinks spike blood glucose rapidly, creating the inflammatory cascade that drives the joint pain, headaches, and bloating many women attribute simply to “overdoing it.” But the real mechanism is microbial: the harmful bacteria are being fed, the beneficial bacteria are being starved, and the gut lining is becoming more permeable as a result.

Dehydration compounds everything. In summer, many women drink less water and more caffeinated or sweetened beverages, which creates an environment in the urinary tract that is significantly more hospitable to bacterial growth.

The connection between high sugar intake and increased susceptibility to urinary tract infections is well documented: sugar feeds bacteria, weakens immune function, and creates an acidic urinary environment that makes infections easier to establish and harder to clear.

A body that arrives at summer with a gut already overburdened, a microbiome already imbalanced, and an inflammatory load already high will feel every excess immediately, and take weeks to recover from what used to take days.

A body that arrives at summer having spent spring in preparation is a fundamentally different story.

The Morning Practice That Changes Everything

Your body runs a natural elimination cycle that peaks in the early morning hours. Between approximately 4am and midday, your liver is completing its overnight processing work, your lymphatic system is moving cellular waste, and your intestines are prepared to clear what they have been holding.

What you give your body in the first hour of the day either supports this process or interrupts it.

Coffee on an empty stomach spikes cortisol and stalls bile flow, the exact mechanism your liver needs to export the waste products of its overnight work. A heavy breakfast diverts blood flow toward digestion before the clearing process is complete.

A simple morning drink taken on an empty stomach, made from whole food ingredients with specific biochemical roles, does the opposite. It activates bile production, stimulates intestinal motility, reduces gut inflammation, feeds beneficial bacteria, and supports the kidney filtration that carries metabolic waste out of the body through urine.

This is not a trend. This is the application of foundational nutritional biochemistry to the window of the day when the body is most receptive to support.

Done consistently, this practice begins to shift the underlying conditions that drive the symptoms most women experience in summer, and throughout the year.

The Kitchen Is Where It All Starts

Understanding what to eat is not the same as having a kitchen that makes it easy to eat well.

Most women make food decisions under time pressure, mental load, and physical fatigue. In those conditions, the environment wins. If your kitchen is stocked with processed, packaged, high-sugar foods, the most educated and motivated woman will reach for them at 7pm when she is tired.

That is not a character flaw. It is the predictable outcome of an environment that does not support the intention.

A spring kitchen audit is one of the highest-leverage health interventions available, and it costs nothing except time. Removing the foods that burden the gut. Restocking with the whole foods that feed the microbiome. Organising the space so that the nourishing choice is the easy one.

This is what it means to make your environment work for you rather than against you.

The Grocery Shop as a Health Practice

Over half of adults report feeling confused about what to buy and why. That confusion has a direct cost, both financial and physical.

Grocery shops filled with good intentions but no clear framework result in wasted food, expensive impulse purchases, and a refrigerator full of ingredients that never become meals.

Knowing how to shop with clarity, understanding which foods actively support the gut microbiome, which foods reduce inflammation, and which foods fuel the brain and stabilise blood sugar, transforms the grocery shop from a source of anxiety into a health practice.

This knowledge, once internalised, takes less time and less money than shopping without it. It also makes cooking at home feel possible rather than overwhelming.

The Breakfast Your Family Is Actually Eating

One of the most significant and least discussed contributors to both adult gut burden and childhood obesity is what happens at breakfast.

A 2025 analysis published in JAMA Network Open, reviewing 1,200 children’s cereals launched between 2010 and 2023, found that fat content increased by 34%, sodium by 32%, and sugar by 11%, while protein and dietary fibre both decreased.

A single serving of many popular children’s cereals now exceeds 45% of the American Heart Association’s daily sugar limit for children. These products are the top breakfast choice for children across the United States, and their declining nutritional quality is a direct contributor to the childhood obesity crisis.

The breakfast that sets blood sugar, cortisol, cognitive function, and gut microbiome activity for the entire day deserves more than a box with a cartoon character on it.

Real food breakfasts, protein, healthy fat, fibre, and whole food ingredients that the gut microbiome can actually use, do not require more time. They require knowledge and a system.

And the family that eats them together is building habits that will serve every member for decades.

Feasting Without the Fallout

The goal of gut preparation is not to avoid summer. It is to enjoy it fully without paying the physical price.

The women who move through summer gatherings feeling energetic, digesting well, and waking up the following morning without a hangover of inflammation are not the ones who refused the food. They are the ones whose bodies were prepared to receive it.

This is what feasting and fasting rhythm means in practice. Not restriction. Not rules. A biological understanding of how the body processes the feast, and the simple morning practice that helps it clear afterward.

A rhythm of celebration and recovery that makes enjoyment sustainable rather than costly.

This is what ancient food cultures already understood. Every tradition that includes abundant celebration also includes periods of simple, cleansing eating. The body was designed for both.

What it was not designed for is a continuous load of processed, sugary, inflammatory food with no recovery built in.

The 3-Week Spring Programme

This spring, I am running a structured 3-week programme to help women prepare their bodies and their kitchens for a summer that feels genuinely good.

Week 1: Clean the kitchen. Set up the system.

A complete kitchen audit and grocery redesign. What to remove, what to add, and how to shop in 20 minutes with clarity. The whole foods that restore the gut microbiome after winter. A system that makes the nourishing choice the easy one.

Week 2: Breakfast of champions.

Three to five real food breakfasts that are quick, culturally adaptable, and designed to stabilise blood sugar, feed the gut microbiome, and make skin glow. Recipes the whole family enjoys, not from a box. The morning that sets up every other decision of the day.

Week 3: Feasting and fasting rhythm for summer.

How to enjoy summer food, cultural celebrations, and social meals without the fatigue and inflammation that follow. The biological rhythm of celebration and recovery. A summer that nourishes rather than depletes.

Each week includes one live call with me at 12pm EST, written and video guides, a shopping guide, and community access throughout.

Ask me about the waitlist to join this program.

The Quiet Cost of Not Preparing

Most women will read this and agree with it entirely. And then summer will arrive, and the same pattern will repeat, because the gap between understanding and action is not filled by information.

It is filled by structure, community, and the knowledge that someone who understands the biochemistry is available to answer the question at 7am when you are standing in the kitchen wondering what to do.

That is what this programme provides.

Spring is the window. The gut that is prepared now will carry you through summer with energy, digestion, and the quiet confidence of a body that is working with you rather than against you.

That is worth three weeks.

Sources

MDVIP/Ipsos Gut Health Survey, 2023
Ballou et al., Gastroenterology, 2023
Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study
Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
Nutrients Journal – High Intake of Sugar and the Balance between Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Gut Bacteria
JAMA Network Open – Nutritional Content of Ready-to-Eat Breakfast Cereals Marketed to Children, 2025

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Reset Your Gut Before Summer Every spring, millions of women spend days cleaning their homes.
